For immediate release: Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:00 a.m.
The National Hurricane Center is predicting that Hurricane Emily will make landfall at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, July 20 in northeastern Mexico, about 60-70 miles south of South Padre Island.
Under this scenario, the National Weather Service feels South Padre Island would see winds in the tropical storm force range of 50 mph with higher gusts.
“This is a much-improved forecast for the area,” said South Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr. “If this forecast holds or moves even farther south, there will be no need for any extraordinary measures by the Town of South Padre Island. Outside of some wind and rain, South Padre Island would remain a great place to be visiting next week.”
Island officials will continue to monitor the storm and will keep area residents informed. People can also monitor from www.townspi.com and then click on the South Padre Island Emergency Management link.
