For immediate release: July 16, 2005-Afternoon Update
The National Hurricane Center is predicting that Hurricane Emily will make landfall late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning in northeastern Mexico, about 70 miles south of South Padre Island.
Under this scenario, the National Weather Service feels South Padre Island would see winds in the tropical storm force range of 50 mph with higher gusts. The heavier rains in the South Padre Island area are predicted to last between 12-18 hours, with 5-8 inches of rain possible.
“This is basically a stable forecast, matching closely what was said this morning,” said South Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr. “If the track maintains, it continues to look better for our area. Still, people should always be monitoring conditions and be prepared if there are any changes.”
Island officials will continue to monitor the storm and will keep area residents informed. People can also monitor from www.townspi.com, and then click on the South Padre Island Emergency Management link.
