For immediate release: July 17, 2005-Afternoon Update
The National Hurricane Center has moved Hurricane Emily’s track slightly north, still making landfall early Wednesday morning in northeastern Mexico, about 80 miles south of South Padre Island.
The adjustment means the tropical force winds that will begin impacting the area Tuesday afternoon may be slightly higher with the rain estimate increasing to 5-10 inches. Storm surge would be about 3-5 feet above normal.
“These changes are why we ask people to stay informed about conditions,” said South Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “We always urge citizens and visitors to be prepared for any changes in the storm path.”
Vehicle identification stickers are no longer available. There are sandbags available at the public works building located behind City Hall at 4501 Padre Blvd.
Island officials will continue to monitor the storm and will keep area residents informed. People can also monitor from www.townspi.com, and then click on the South Padre Island Emergency Management link.
