South Padre Island Emergency Management

For immediate release: July 18, 2005-Afternoon Update
Emily's Southern Track Remains Strong
The National Hurricane Center still believes Hurricane Emily will make landfall late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning about 70 miles south of South Padre Island in northeastern Mexico. For the South Padre Island area, they are forecasting sustained winds in the 50 mph range with gusts to 80 mph beginning Tuesday. Rainfall totals of 5-10 inches are possible. The Island is currently in a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning.

There is no form of evacuation planned at this time. People are always free to leave on their own. Cameron County is urging recreational vehicles to relocate. The Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway will be closed at midnight today to recreational vehicles only. No RVs will be allowed on or off the Island after midnight. All other vehicles will still be allowed on the causeway until further notice.

Sandbags are no longer available for Island residents.

Island officials will continue to monitor the progress of the storm and will stay in close contact with all appropriate local, state and national agencies.
