For immediate release: Monday, 7-18-05-Morning Update
Hurricane Emily is still projected to make landfall between 60-70 miles south of South Padre Island in northeastern Mexico.
“We are still looking at tropical storm force winds starting late Tuesday afternoon,” said South Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “If the projections hold true, the Island should be doing fine. However, we are still in close enough proximity to the storm that people in the South Padre Island area who are feeling uncomfortable are urged to move to the mainland. This is not a call for evacuation. This is simply a cautionary note for our area.”
Island officials will continue to monitor the storm’s progress and will remain in close contact with all appropriate local, state and national agencies.
People can also monitor from www.townspi.com, and then click on the South Padre Island Emergency Management link.
