South Padre Island’s beaches are closed to all recreational activity until further notice.
“The water’s activity is growing some,” said Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “As a precaution, we are closing the beaches to all recreational activity.”
The National Hurricane Center still believes Hurricane Emily will make landfall late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning at about a high Category 2 about 72-100 miles south of the Island in northeastern Mexico.
For the South Padre Island area, they are forecasting tropical storm force winds from 39-52 mph beginning Tuesday. Isolated showers are expected about 48 hours after landfall.
Under the current forecast, there is no potential threat of the hurricane’s eye hitting the Island. According to the NHC, the Island remains under a hurricane warning as a precautionary measure. The Island is also under a tropical storm warning.
There is no form of evacuation planned at this time.
Sandbags are now available for Island residents at the public works department.
