For immediate release: July 19, 2005
The National Hurricane Center predicts Hurricane Emily will make landfall between 6 and 10 a.m. Wednesday at a Category 4 about 100 miles south of South Padre Island in northeastern Mexico.
Tropical storm force winds from 39-52 mph remain forecasted through Wednesday. Isolated showers, between two and four inches of rain, are expected for the Island for about 48 hours after landfall. Isolated tornadoes are forecasted for South Texas through Wednesday.
There is no potential threat of the hurricane’s eye hitting the Island, according to the NHC. The Island remains under a hurricane warning as a precautionary measure. The Island is also under a tropical storm warning.
“Emily’s projected landfall remains a distance from the Island,” said Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “Wind and some rain should be all the Island sees under the current forecast.”
The Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway has reopened after it was temporarily closed to eastbound traffic.
The causeway will REMAIN OPEN unless the weather deteriorates.
There is NO form of evacuation planned under the current forecast. However, the beaches are CLOSED to all recreational activity due to increased waves.
Sandbags are NO LONGER available.
Island officials will continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Emily and will stay in close contact with all appropriate local, state and national agencies. People can also monitor from www.townspi.com, and then click on the South Padre Island Emergency Management link.
