NWS Predicts Hurricane Dean’s Landfall Thursday

Hurricane Dean is currently predicted to make landfall between midnight and 3 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 along the Texas coastline as a CAT 3 or 4, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS officials are presently focused on Galveston County, but stress that the entire Texas coastline faces “a serious threat.”

The Texas coastline may begin to see tropical storm force winds as early as noon, Wednesday which consist of 39 to 73 mph.

SPI officials continue to urge residents to remain very watchful, and individual preparations should be under way. According to current predictions, Hurricane Dean is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday, Aug. 21.

State emergency officials are encouraging Texas residents to fuel up vehicles and adhere to local officials’ warnings.

The South Padre Island Fire Department is continuing to issue hurricane identification stickers for those returning to the Island after a major storm event. Stickers may be obtained at the fire department located behind City Hall at 4501 Padre Blvd. Stickers will no longer be distributed 48 hours from a storm’s landfall.

SPI officials are asking that residents and tourists have their medications refilled and up-to-date, keep cash on hand and prepare necessary supplies.

Those with special needs are urged to contact the Police Department at (956) 761-5454 to be added to a special-needs list in the event of severe weather.
