For immediate release: Aug. 15, 2007 (12:30 p.m.)
Tropical Storm Erin is predicted to make landfall between South Padre Island and Corpus Christi at about 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Wind gusts in excess of 30 mph are expected at landfall with possible rainfall between 3-5 inches. Residents and business owners should remove outdoor items that may be prone to movement due to high wind conditions.
Cameron County officials have issued a voluntary removal of RVs and other “high profile vehicles” due to expected wind gusts and subsequent possible closure of the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge.
SPI officials continue to urge residents to remain very watchful, and individual preparations should be under way. Tropical Storm Dean currently in the Atlantic, is also of great interest to the NWS and the SPI Emergency Management Team. Tropical Storm Dean is expected to strengthen and enter the Gulf of Mexico later next week.
The South Padre Island Fire Department is continuing to issue hurricane identification stickers for those returning to the Island after a major storm event. Stickers may be obtained at the fire department located behind City Hall at 4501 Padre Blvd.
SPI officials are asking that residents and tourists have their medications refilled and up-to-date, keep cash on hand, fill up their fuel tanks and prepare necessary supplies.
