For immediate release: Sept. 11, 2008 (Noon)
As Hurricane Ike churns its way to the Texas Gulf Coast, South Padre Island will have increased tides with possible coastal flooding by Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
South Padre Island has been placed under a coastal flood warning with other significant hazards including high- to very-high surf in excess of 12 ft. at the jetties and piers and possibly reaching 15 ft. on Friday.
Island officials have restricted beach access as a precautionary measure.
“Visitors and residents must always remain aware of rip currents, and even more so now,” said Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “Although Ike isn’t predicted to come our way, the storm’s reach will be apparent. Wave activity is expected to surpass that of Hurricane Gustav.”
Significant beach erosion may occur with high swells and waves beginning today and continuing through another high-tide cycle, according to the NWS.
SPI officials have taken additional precautions in preparation for the storm. Beach umbrellas, trash cans and signage have been removed from Island beaches. Beach access points that allow for Town vehicle access have been sand-bermed to protect against potential flooding.
The South Padre Island Fire Department is continuing to issue hurricane re-entry stickers for those returning to the Island after a major storm event. Stickers may be obtained at the fire department located behind the former City Hall Building at 4501 Padre Blvd.
Empty sandbags are also available at the South Padre Island Public Works maintenance building located behind 4501 Padre Blvd. Five empty bags per resident and 10 per business are available.
