For immediate release: Sept. 12, 2008 (5:30 p.m.)
South Padre Island continues to see some coastal flooding today with the surge expected to peak near high tide at about 5 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
Low tide is at 7-8 p.m. today, but little relief is expected until Saturday with water slowly receding.
According to the NWS, surf conditions are high and will remain as such until Saturday morning decreasing through Saturday afternoon.
Some Gulf- and Bay-side flooding has occurred, and access to north South Padre Island has been restricted due to flooding.
“The Island community is urged to avoid driving through flooded areas,” said Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “The beaches are also restricted due to very dangerous surf conditions.”
The Rio Grande Valley may see 20-30 mph sustained winds with higher gusts. Thunderstorms are also possible tonight and Saturday, and the Valley may see another rainy week, according to the NWS.
Empty sandbags are also available at the South Padre Island Public Works maintenance building located behind 4501 Padre Blvd. Five empty bags per resident and 10 per business are available.
