For immediate release: Sept. 19, 2005
South Padre Island officials are monitoring developments in Tropical Storm Rita.
According to the current forecast, Tropical Storm Rita is expected to become a hurricane tonight and is projected to enter the Gulf of Mexico between noon and 4 p.m. Tuesday. Its path remains to the Texas northern coast.
Still, National Weather Service officials said there remains quite a bit of uncertainty, and a better lock on its path is expected Tuesday.
“We’re still asking that the community take precautions should inclement weather approach,” said South Padre Island Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton Jr. “The Island’s Emergency Management Team is keeping a close eye on the storm.”
SPI officials are asking that residents and tourists have their medications refilled and up-to-date, keep cash on hand and prepare necessary supplies.
Those with special needs are urged to contact the Police Department at (956) 761-1452 to be added to a special-needs list in the event of severe weather.
Current projections show a possible Category 3 hurricane making landfall somewhere along the Texas coastline as early as Friday or as late as Sunday.
Storm updates are available on the South Padre Island Emergency Management Web site at www.townspi.com, and click on the Emergency Management link.
