South Padre Island’s beaches will be closed at noon due to increased wave activity and rip tide dangers.
Although Hurricane Rita, a Category 5 storm, is continuing on its current track, SPI may see some residual weather including possible heavy rains.
According to the National Weather Service, a tropical storm watch and inland tropical storm watch is forecasted for Cameron, Willacy and Hidalgo counties at landfall.
The SPI’s Fire Department has discontinued distribution of vehicle identification stickers.
Recreational vehicles at county parks on the Island have been asked to relocate by 1 p.m. today.
Filled sandbags are available at Public Works at 4405 Padre Blvd. Each residence is allowed eight sandbags and each commercial residence is allowed 10 sandbags. They are available at no cost.
SPI officials are asking that residents and tourists have their medications refilled and up-to-date, keep cash on hand and prepare necessary supplies.
Those with special needs are urged to contact the Police Department at (956) 761-5454 to be added to a special-needs list in the event of severe weather.
